Super 8 is a 2011 romantic science fiction thriller written and directed by J.J Adrams and produced by Steven Speilberg. The massive blockbuster has a strong young cast Joel Courtney (Joeeph Lamb), Elle Fanning (Alice Dainard), Kyle Chandler (Jackson Lamb), Riley Griffiths (Charles Kaznyk), Ryan Lee (Cary), Ron Eldard (Louis Dainard), Garriel Basso (Martin), Noah Emmerich (Colonel Nelec), David Gallagher (Donny), Bruce Greenwood (Cooper), Zach Mills (Preston) and Amanda Michalka (Jen Kaznyk).
In 1979, Joe Lamb (Joel Courtney) living in a town in Ohio has just recently lost his mother in an accident. Louis Dainard (Ron Eldard) comes to the wake but Joe's father Deputy Jack Lamb (Kyle Chandler) drags Dainard out of the house in handcuffs puts him in the back of the car blaming him for his wife's death. After afew months Joe's school is on summer holidays. Charles Kaznyk (Riley Griffiths) a friend of Joe's persuades Dainard's daughter Alice (Elle Fanning) star in his low budget zombie movie filmed on Super 8. Charles wants to enter his film in a local film festival. Alice agree's and borrows her fathers car to take Joe, Charles, Preston (Zach Mills), Martin (Gabriel Basso) and Cary (Ryan Lee) to an abandoned train station so they can film a scene.
During the shoot Charles sees a train coming and wants proper effects in the movie so they rushed to do the scene while the train was passing. While they are filming Joe looks around at a noise and sees a pickup truck driving on the rails towards the train which then ends up knocking the train off the track. They all ran for their lives dodging containers from the train. Joe looks up a sees something powerful trying to bust his way out of the container. After the crash had finished they find that in the truck was was Dr Woodward (Glynn Turman) their biology teacher. He pointed a gun at them and told them to go home never talk about what has happened or they and their parents will be killed. In the distance they the air force coming so they get back into the car and get away before they arrived. When they got there they found an empty film box so they suspect that someone might have filmed the crash.
The Air force stick around for acouple of days which seemed strange to the town people because it was only a train crash. Soon weird things start happening in their town like dogs run away then kitchen appliances, car engines and power lines start vanishing and some of the town people go missing. Jack with the help from a town citizen manages to hack into the air force communications so he could find out is really going on. The air force started a fire just outside the town so it can give them a reason to evacuate everybody so they can finally stop what is happening. Meanwhile Joe and Charles had the film developed during the crash and decided to watch it but didn't realize they had caught on film what they were running from, a monstours alien breaking out of the train. Joe later learns that Alice has been abducted by the alien and decides to go back into the town to rescue her. When they get to the school to go to Dr Woodwards office thinking they might find something about the alien that could help them find Alice. But in tern they find out that back in 1958 an extraterrestrial crash landed on Earth. The alien meaned no harm to the humans but only wanted to rebuild his ship with white shape shifting cubes so he could return home but the government imprisoned and tortured him. They also find out Woodward was a researcher at the time and was attacked by the creature which gave him a bond with him and found out all he wanted was to go home so that's why he deliberately derails the train.
Meanwhile Jack gets to the base and realizes that his son and friends are gone back into the town so he gets Dainard and the two of them head back in to get their children. As they head towards the town Dainard tearfully apologizes about Jacks wifes death saying that if he had gone to work and not let her take his shift then he would be the one in the accident, then Jack forgives him and said it was an accident. Shortly afterwards all the white cubes and metal from around the town start sticking to the water tower aligning and creating a ship so the alien can go home. Everyone watches as the ship takes off into space.
This is truly a spectacular movie with great special affects and edge of your seat action and is an unmissable blockbuster for all the family to see.
